- The government has increased the interest rates on small savings schemes by up to 70 basis points for the April-June 2023 quarter. (1 percentage point = 100 basis points).
- Therefor NSC interest rate has increased to 7.7 % for April 1, 2023 till June 30, 2023.
Note: NSC scheme started with two types of certificate i.e. NSC VIII Issue and NSC IX Issue. In December 2015, Government of India discontinued the NSC IX Issue. So now you can only apply for NSC VIII Issue.

NSC VIII Issue and NSC IX Issue.
Government of India revises NSC interest rate on quarterly basis. Interest rate on NSC is compounded on a yearly basis. Interest will be payable only at the time of maturity.
NSC comes with the lock-in period of 5 years. This means there is a fixed maturity period of 5 years. Interest earned every year on investment is reinvested to get better returns.
All resident Adults Indians individually or jointly (up to 3 adults) can invest in the NSC scheme. Guardians on behalf of a minor or minor above 10 years of age can invest in the NSC scheme.
There is no limit as such. An individual can open any number of NSC accounts.
Investments made in the SSY scheme are eligible for the tax benefits under section 80 C (Max 1.5 Lakhs). Accumulated interest is also tax free but you have to pay taxes for the last year interest earned as this can’t be reinvested.
You can buy NSC certificates through two modes i.e. electronic mode (E-mode) or passbook mode. You would require a savings account (with a bank or post office). Not necessary to have net banking enabled.
The maturity period of NSC is 5 years.
