How a Flexi Cap Fund Works
We all have made our teams on Dream11 right? So think of your Dream11 team. You pick the best XI based on the pitch and form. A fund manager does the same, but with companies.
- Big stars = large companies
- All-rounders = mid-sized companies
- Rising talent = small companies
There is only one rule. At least 65% of your money must go into company stocks. After that, the manager can choose any mix and change it as markets change.
Flexi Cap Fund Growth in 2026
According to AMFI data, the category grew steadily from January 2026 to September 2026:
- Assets grew from ₹5.47 lakh crore to ₹5.88 lakh crore
- Investor accounts (folios) rose from 2.25 crore to 2.50 crore
- Net new money was ₹61,676 crore, the highest of any equity category
- Even in March, when markets fell, investors added ₹10,054 crore

How It Differs From Other Funds
Most equity funds have fixed rules on company size. A flexi cap fund does not.
- Large Cap: 80%+ in India’s top 100 companies
- Mid Cap: 65%+ in companies ranked 101–250
- Small Cap: 65%+ in companies ranked 251 and below
- Multi Cap: at least 25% each in large, mid and small
- Flexi Cap: 65%+ in stocks, in any mix

How the Name Flexi Cap Was Born
The story is quite fun. In September 2020, SEBI told multi cap funds to keep 25% each in large, mid and small companies. Fund houses pushed back. As a result, SEBI created a new category in November 2020 and called it “Flexi Cap”. Today, that escape route is India’s largest equity category.

In short, this team is built for years, not one match.
